Let me start by making the point that I do not like the independent baptist churches. I find them controlling and cultic in nature. In this article we will explore this church as well as the 20/20 segment on abuse in the independent baptist churches.
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Recently 20/20 did a show on the sexual abuse found in several independent baptist churches in the USA. The interesting point is the great cover-up by the pastor, the silence of the church members, and how the child victim was made to be the one at fault for the sexual abuse. What amazed me is that the parents stayed silent through the ordeal as their daughter was made out to be the criminal. The church people didn't seem to mind that the child was made out to be the criminal either. To me that is very sad. The police should have been called immediately so the molester could be charged and be put in jail so he would not do a repeat offence on another child. But instead people were told that they must have a forgiving spirit. Myself I feel a forgiving spirit is good and could be exercised while the molester is spending his 20+ years in prison. You see there is a difference between forgiveness and justice. A child molester must be punished or he will repeat his crime again and again.
Now back to the 20/20 report. I feel they did show the cultic nature of the independent baptist churches. However, they also had a greater goal. Their purpose was to attack anyone who believes the Bible is the Word of God. I certainly do not see 20/20 going through all the molestation by Catholic priests against children. I also do not see 20/20 going through the sodomites who love boys in the homosexual movement. Neither do I see 20/20 reporting on all the public school teachers that have molested the young students in their classes. Instead, 20/20 concentrates their focus on those who claim to believe the Bible is the Word of God.
The tragedy of child molestation goes way beyond the independent baptist churches. Yes it happened in these churches, but it also happens in many other churches as well. I believe it is important that parents do their jobs and immediately contact the police if their child is molested. Don't go to the pastor first, but go to the police and put the molester behind bars.
16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
As shown by the 20/20 report, the independent baptist churches can be quite controlling. Their pastors love to set themselves up as kings and lords in their church with the people being the peasants.
The indepentant baptistists teach certain discinctives which they do not really believe. Here is one of them:
There are Two officers of the local Church. The Bible teaches that there are only two offices in the church; pastor and deacon. There is no Scriptural support for the hierarchy of offices in any church.
Notice they teach there is no Scriptural support for the hiearchy of offices in any church. This ties in with the priesthood of believers where all members are equal before God. Indepentant baptists list this but they do not believe what it says. Instead pastors set themselves up as little kings and lord's in their church while being accountable to none. We saw that in the 20/20 report with the authority of the pastor and the silence of the "peasants" under the pastor. This is a problem throughout the indepentant baptist churches.
I speak from experience because we sadly attended an independent baptist church for a few years. Here is an example of what the pastors do. A new pastor came to the church. Over time his wife felt she had authority over our children being in the office of pastor's wife. She began ordering my oldest what to do and how to do it. This lady was told she has no authority as we are the parents and will do what is best for our children. Her reaction to this was she began to hate my wife. She was cold and rude to her at any chance she had. Over time this continued until one night she had a tear down session with my wife. They went into another room with another lady ("witness") for some church discipline. It was there she attempted to rake my wife over the coals and give her a hard time. The subject of our children came up again and she got very angry when she was told that we were the parents and will decide what is best for our children.
After this abuse session, we left this cultic church and I did not have to do anything to convince my wife that this was a bad, cultic church that should be avoided. The pastor and his wife were controlling ,domineering, and cold hearted. I felt they were nothing but hireling wolves who do not love God's people.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Independent baptists have a strong rule. No movie theaters are allowed. If you attend a movie theater then you are lower than the lowest sinner in their eyes. However, it is ok to take home the same movies in the theater and play them at home.
The independent baptists do not stop there. The darling of the independent baptist churches is C.S. Lewis and his occult spell casting story series called Narnia. None of the members will do their homework and research C.S. Lewis. (this includes pastors). For if they did then they would know that C.S. Lewis was never a born again Christian and his works are filled with the occult which is an offense to God. The independent baptist church we attended had people "enjoying" Harry Potter, Narnia, the occultic Twilight series and who knows what else.
This shows independent baptists are addicted to entertainment and have been swept away by the love of the occult. You see witches, spells, enchantments, wizards are acceptable types of home entertainment for these religious hypocrites. They sit in their homes and some will watch Harry Potter, others will watch Lord of the rings and a big favorite is all the spells and witches found in the Narnia series. They will enjoy movies at home like the Twilight series which encourages sex with demons. Spells and the occult do not bother these people and if they are warned that witchcraft is evil, they will react negatively and with anger.
I began placing some articles on the tract table warning of the occult. I didn't hand them out but just put them on the table for people to take if they wish. The reaction was the pastor told me to stop. He must have feared losing church members because of their love of occultic entertainment. Or perhaps he thought warning of the occult was divisive in his little church kingdom.
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
A subject not spoken about in independent baptist churches in Canada is the suicide of one of the leaders. We did not attend this church but did visit it a couple of times. Faithway is an independent baptist church in Ajax Ontario with a Bible college. The leader of that church committed suicide with a plastic bag and some pills. When I first heard of it everything was a big secret and people pridefully and "humbly" kept silent. So after a couple of google searches, I found out what happened. I always felt that was very bad fruit for the independent baptist church to have one of their leaders kill himself. The man had a good wife, grown up children, full church and school, and still he killed himself. Since then we spoke to someone who visited that church. Contemporary music is slowly coming into that church and the girls dress code is going more revealing. Revealing clothing is another trait in independent baptist churches. The women like to show the men what they have by using immodest dress.
Another common practice with independent baptists is they only have fellowship with fellow independent baptists. This means if a person's whole life is in their church, and they get abused and leave, they are cut off. Fellow members will end friendship with those who are no longer independent baptists. This can be very tough for a person who grew up as a independent baptist who leaves due to abuse. Such a person needs to start over and get a whole new set of friends. This is even harder for a person in their mid to late teens who grew up in this cultic church. They may even get themselves cut-off by their own family. This is a very cultic thing for independent baptists to do.
Dress codes are also important before God. There is a thing called Biblical modesty. This means men look like men and women look like women. Neither men or women should dress to illicit sexual desire from the opposite sex. Women should be dressed properly and so should men. This standard is quickly falling in independent baptist churches where some women let it all 'hang out' and dress very immodestly. I also admit that Godly and modest dress is falling away from many types of churches including the independent baptist church.
A person is also made out to be a slave to the church by coming whenever the doors are open. People are told to serve, serve, serve the church. Members are expected to be there on cleaning days, outreach days, decoration days etc. Guilt trips are given to encourage people to serve and give.
Not everything is bad about the independent baptist churches. Most who attend use the KJV Bible but do not know why. The answer is simple. The KJV is based on uncorrupted manuscripts. The "other" versions use the manuscripts put together and perverted by Wescott and Hort. This is why the KJV is the best Bible to use.
Next we have the subject of rock music. When Satan was created he was made with musical instruments built right in his body. Of course he would use his corrupted music to lead astray. It is good for any church to stay far away from contemporary rock music. It is to be avoided and has the fruit of rebellion, occult, drugs, eastern religion etc to prove it. All churches who embrace rock music go astray. It really is as simple as that. Many abuse victims who leave a cultic independent baptist church wind up in some kind of rock music church. This is like jumping out of the pan and straight into the fires of hell. By all means get out of the independent baptist church but do not join a rock and roll church!
1 Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
For all those who have been abused and left independent baptist churches, be glad you got out of a cultic system with pastors and deacons who think they are above others. These so-called leaders are an offense to God and will receive their due at the appointed time of judgment.
Once free from the clutches of the independent baptist church, keep looking for a good and Godly church. Check out the pastor to see if he really loves God. Does he warn God's people to keep away from all the occultic entertainment out there these days? Does the pastor have a loving heart toward God's people as God expect such a man to have? If not then he is nothing more than just a filthy hireling that likes the KJV Bible and does not like rock music in the church. A pastor should not exalt himself above God's people. He should also lead by example. This is not done in the independent baptist church. Stay away from such churches. The Lord is judge and all the false pastors and hirelings who do not love the Lord or His people will soon be judged.
If after looking you cannot find a Godly church, then go the home church route. It is very important that you stay faithful to the Lord and await His coming while surrounding yourself and your family with solid Biblical teaching! There are all kinds of good Bible teaching messages that can be downloaded from the internet.
2 Thess 2
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
We are living in great days of falling away before the rapture and then the second coming of the Lord Jesus. Our Lord warned us that churches would fall away in these last days. Guess what... many have fallen away and the tares (false Christians) are getting easier to see.
Yes the independent baptist churches should be avoided in my opinion. If you must, then do a home church. There are all kinds of good sermons which can be downloaded from the internet. The main thing is to stay faithful and eagerly await the soon return of the Lord who will deal with all pastors who misuse the office of a pastor. I believe there will be special judgment for all those who abuse God's people rather than to love them and build them up in Christ.
