ALMOST PERSUADED - IS STILL LOST!

by Alan Yusko

In this article we will take a look at a very common type of person in the world. Such a person has a positive and open outlook toward the Gospel of the Lord Jesus and Christianity. However their knowledge is only head knowledge and it is not of the heart. Such a person may respect Christianity but they do not accept the Lord Jesus themselves. This means they are lost and will perish in the lake of fire!

In the Bible there is an example of one such a man. His name was King Agrippa. This man was familiar with the Bible of his day and even believed in portions of it. Yet King Agrippa was still a lost hellbound sinner! Here is the account of the man below:

Acts 26
26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.
28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.
29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

Notice verse 27 where Paul indicates that King Agrippa believed in parts of the Bible. This man believed in the prophets in the Old Testament. These prophets gave testimony of the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. However, King Agrippa never believed in the Lord Jesus. The closest he came to becoming a believer is found in verse 28. Agrippa told Paul, ALMOST thou persuadest me! Agrippa told Paul that he understood what he was saying and he was 'almost' convinced. Agrippa 'almost' accepted the Lord Jesus as His Lord and Saviour!

The sad thing of this account in the Bible is this. Never again do we hear anything about King Agrippa! After King Agrippa is confronted with the Gospel and rejects it, he is never heard from again. As far as we know, he never got saved after this point. The closest Agrippa came to salvation was 'almost'. After hearing the Gospel, he turned his back in rejection of the Lord Jesus and salvation!

How many people are like King Agrippa today? I dare say there are many! These people really do not want the Lord Jesus as their Saviour but they do respect the choices of other people. The common argument is that if it works for you then fine and good. However, it is not my choice. Others may enjoy hearing about Bible prophecy and seeing its fulfillment in these last days. Yet these people do not want the Lord Jesus to be their Lord and Saviour!

God calls people to salvation as He doesn't want people to perish in their sins and spend eternity to hell. The Lord reasons with people as in the below verse:

Isa 1
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Forgiveness from sin is available to all men. Yet very few want to have the Lord Jesus as their Saviour. God calls and calls. However, there comes a time when the Lord gives up on a person. Here is an interesting analogy. Every time a person hears the Gospel and is drawn to accept the Lord Jesus, this is a call from God's Holy Spirit. But each time a person rejects to be saved they pour a small amount of cement in their heart. Over time of being called and rejecting the amount of cement in the heart grows large. There comes a time when such a person has hardened their heart to the point where they will never be saved. At that point the Lord gives up on such a person. Since the person rejected the truth of the Gospel, they will be wide open to deception and lies. It is interesting how easy people will accept the lies, deceptions, and false teachings from the devil when the Lord Jesus is rejected. Once the Lord gives up on a person, that person will never be saved. This person has hardened their hearts to the point where they will never be saved.

King Agrippa was such a person. Over the years Agrippa had studied and believed in the Old Testament prophets. When the Lord Jesus came King Agrippa chose not to believe in Him as his Lord and Saviour. Paul confronted Agrippa on all this. God's Holy Spirit worked mightily on King Agrippa. The end result was Agrippa was almost persuaded! In the end King Agrippa rejected the Lord Jesus. He poured more cement into his heart. Sadly, this was the point of no return for King Agrippa. After rejecting the Lord Jesus this last time, the Lord gave up on him. Agrippa had built up so much hardness in his heart that his heart was no longer open to the Gospel. After this challenge to be saved Agrippa's heart was so hard, that the Lord gave up on him. Never again would Agrippa respond to the Gospel. He had chosen to reject the Lord Jesus and the Lord honored that choice.

Could you, reader, be doing the same thing with the Gospel and the Lord Jesus as you read this article?

I strongly suggest that you accept the Lord Jesus as your Saviour now! Do not wait until later or tomorrow as it may be too late for you! Each rejection of the Lord Jesus hardens your heart. Do not harden your heart to the point where you will never be saved!

Here is a final warning from the Bible. The choice is yours. Heaven or hell. To be saved or lost. To accept the Lord Jesus or to reject Him! Make your choice now!

Matt 7
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

John 14
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
