BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT
By Alan Yusko

When I was I young Christian I was troubled about certain threats I heard concerning the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. I can remember talking to Pentecostals, who would use that threat if anyone ever challenged certain things they believed. Their leaders were immune also. There was another threat issued concerning "touching God's anointed". What this meant is that this man can preach and do anything and if you dare raise a warning flag and don't go along with it, you are in danger of touching one of God's anointed. If you do that then God will get you for such a terrible sin. This is all sad but very true. The sad thing is this type of mentality still exists today. I have still heard the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit threat as well as the "touch not my anointed" threat given by the charismatics.

In this tract we will give an example of what I call the standard cheap two-bit charismatic threat of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The charismatics just love their tongues. In fact they love them so much that if they are challenged about their useless babbling, slaying in the spirit and other deceptions, many will get angry and issue the standard charismatic threat. Below is such an example of this threat:

-----------sample cheap charismatic threat begins-------------------
However, to make fun of the tongues that I did receive subsequent to salvation is total blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. You are attributing my experience that I, along with many other Christians, had to the devil. Jesus said that this sin was unforgivable. You may not have experienced it for yourself. You may not understand it. Your church may not quite accept it. But I suggest that you leave it alone and not mock it or make fun of something that is happening TODAY throughout the world. Attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to the devil is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and is the one sin that will never merit God's forgiveness in this life or in the life to come.
-----------end of sample cheap charismatic threat-------------------

Quite a threat isn't it? It really means, you better not disagree with my charismatic tongues or you are in danger of losing your salvation by committing an unpardonable sin against God's Holy Spirit. Wow, that is really cultic mentality. The cults and false religions do similar things to their members if they dare disagree or dare to leave the cult. By Scripture twisting the charismatics wrongly apply the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and use that 'weapon' against anyone who dares to stand against what they are doing.

Notice their above un-Scriptural definition of blasphemy. It is to attribute a work of the Holy Spirit to that of the devil. Then once they have defined this they then take their un-Scriptural practices and call it a work of the Holy Spirit. Next, anyone who dares disagree is given the terrible blasphemy against the Holy Spirit threat. That folks, is a very evil thing to do! It doesn't stop with just tongues. No, they then include a list of other un-Scriptural practices. Demonic things like being slain in the spirit, barking like a dog, uncontrolled laughing are a few other 'works' (supposedly) of the Holy Spirit that a person better not dare challenge. Again all I can say is this is cultic mentality and it is evil.

Now that we have shown the cheap threat given by deceived charismatics when their un-Scriptural practices are challenged, lets look at what the Bible really says is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

First lets look at the verses in context with the entire chapter:

Matthew 12
22. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
24 But when the Pharisees heard [it], they said, This [fellow] doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast [them] out? therefore they shall be your judges.
28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come.
33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by [his] fruit.
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Verse 22 starts out with a man being healed by Jesus. This is a miracle that no one could deny. In fact, Jesus had done many miracles that none could deny and this was just one more of them. The people had proof by miracles that the Lord Jesus was exactly who He claimed to be!

Verse 23 has the people amazed at this miracle. They knew and could easily see that a great miracle had occurred. The fact of the miracle could not be denied.

By doing these miracles the Lord Jesus had given irrefutable proof of who He was and that He was from God. People had come face to face with the fact and had to react and make a decision.

Verse 24 shows the religious leaders' reaction. They had already rejected Jesus and no amount of proof would convince them. They had made up their minds despite the facts and proofs of the miracles. Lots of people out there today have the same attitude. Rather than believing the miracle they accused Him of doing these things by the power of Satan. Remember they made this accusation in the light of irrefutable proof which they would not receive.

In response, the Lord Jesus refuted the religious leaders and gave the warning about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit in verse 31,32.

In light of this, here is what involves committing the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit:

1) Jesus must be physically in the world
2) there must be irrefutable proof as to who He is (signs, miracles etc)

At that point the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit may be committed. Since the Lord Jesus is not physically in the world today the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit can not be committed.

After the Lord Jesus returns from Heaven and sets up His 1000 year Kingdom this sin can again be committed. However, it cannot be committed now as the Lord Jesus is not physically present in the world.

Here is another point. A Spirit-reborn Christian cannot ever commit the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit because of the sealing of the Holy Spirit. The Christian is saved and sealed for eternity! Here are some verses that reflect that fact:

2 Cor 1
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Ephesians 1
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 4
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Notice above that the Christian is sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption. This means that God saves and keeps the Christian and guarantees they will make it to heaven!

Let me repeat myself. Once a person is saved.. at that time he receives and is sealed by the Holy Spirit. That person can never blasphemy the Holy Spirit!

The closest that a person can come to blaspheming against the Holy Spirit is to die rejecting God's salvation. Only a lost person who rejects the Gospel can do that. By rejecting the Gospel the lost person is snubbing Gods free love gift of salvation and saying: I don't want your salvation....I'll pay for my sins myself. That person who dies will perish forever in the lake of fire!

Hebrews 2
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];

CONCLUSION:

The charismatics who use their cheap evil blasphemy threat show they are not Biblically based. They have twisted the Bible to defend their false doctrines and practices. Then if they are challenged they bring out their cheap blasphemy threat as a defense. This to me is very evil. Personally I have found charismatics to be very nasty people. If their false doctrines are challenged they uniformly resort to cheap Scripture twisting threats. If one of their false teacher leaders, like Benny Hinn et al, are challenged, the charismatics get angry and issue more threats. Rather than face up to what the Bible says these people resort to cheap threats to defend their false doctrines and practices.

In this tract we have given an example of such a evil threat given by the charismatics. We have also looked at the Scriptures and seen what is involved in the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. It is very clear that this sin cannot be committed now as the Lord Jesus is not physically in the world. Instead the rule for this age is deception, wolves, and false teaching. Christians must be aware of evil teachings and practices and avoid these things.

Next, we showed that a Christian can never commit such a sin because they are sealed with the Holy Spirit at salvation.

If you ever hear a cheap charismatic blasphemy against the Holy Spirit threat or the "touch not God's anointed' threat given, then ignore it. These people reject sound Biblical doctrine and are really Scripture twisters in their blind defense of evil.
