SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS OF THE LOST

By Alan Yusko

Lost people are also blind people. Yes they are able to see things in the physical world as they live from day to day. However, as far as eternity, heaven, hell, salvation, and God goes, they are totally blind. In fact, lost people are literally one heartbeat from an eternity lost in hell. The sad thing is they are so blind and they cannot see or comprehend their extreme spiritual danger. Lost people simply live their life with no concern for their eternal and lost state and their separation from God. Many of these lost people attend church and even claim to be Christians! Some are even pastors! But they do not know or love God. They simply love and serve themselves in this world. Church involvement may be a source for business contacts, power, popularity, entertainment, or whatever else to these lost people.

In this tract we will briefly look at the extreme blindness of lost hellbound people:

1 Cor 2
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

Lost people do not have the ability to comprehend spiritual truths from the Word of God. These things are dismissed as foolishness. The Bible says that lost people cannot succeed in knowing spiritual things. The reason is they are spiritually discerned or cut-off from God. This means they are separated from the source of Biblical truth. Lost people do not have the indwelling Holy Spirit so they are unable to comprehend the things of God. Not only that but lost people do not want to comprehend the things of God. They feel it is foolishness and a complete waste of time.

Heb 4
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it].

The reason lost people cannot receive the things of God is they have no faith. They do not know or believe in God. Therefore when a lost person hears spiritual truth it does not profit them. They do not have the ability to receive it into their lives and hearts. They can hear about the things of God with their ears but they are unable to hold-on and comprehend with their heart.

John 12
38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with [their] eyes, nor understand with [their] heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

It is a very dangerous thing for a person to hear the Gospel and then to reject it. There comes a point in time, and only God knows when, where the lost are blinded by God. God purposes to keep them blinded since they have heard and rejected the truth. God honors a person's decision. If a person decides to reject the things of God, he is able to make that eternal choice. But there comes a time when God allows the heart to be hardened and the eyes to be blinded to the point where that lost person will never be saved. This is a very sad state when a person is given over to their sin by God. Yes, a person may choose to reject God. But beware as each time the Gospel is heard and rejected, the heart grows just a little bit harder. At some point God will give up on that person and allow the heart to completely harden. At that point the lost person can hear the Gospel 1000 times and still not be affected. The call of the Gospel and the salvation through the Lord Jesus will be complete foolishness to the lost person.

Here is another example of God giving up on the lost person.

2 Thess 2
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The above verses are describing the time when the antichrist rises to power. This will occur sometime after the rapture of the Church to heaven. Satan will then be free to bring to power his antichrist. All kinds of Satanic miracles and delusions will be used when the antichrist rises to power. Next have a look at verse 10. All people who rejected the truth of salvation will be rejected by God. God says these people clearly heard the truth and they still rejected it. As a result these people are rejected by God. Look at verse 11. Here God will send a strong delusion on these lost people. They have rejected the truth but they will be allowed to believe this delusion or lie with all their hearts. The result of this is found in verse 12. The reason they are to believe this delusion is so they will be damned to hell for all eternity. These lost people will live the rest of their short lives believing a lie from hell. At some point they will die and perish in the lake of fire forever!

The above verses give a description of how God will reject the person who rejects Him and the free gift of salvation and eternal life. It is not a light thing for a person to snub his nose up at God and reject the blood of Jesus that cleanses from all sin! Beware lost person as God may reject you. At some point, only known to God, you will receive your last call to salvation. You will hear and understand the Gospel that saves your soul for the last time. After you do your final rejection, God will harden your heart and allow you to believe lies and falsehoods concerning your eternal soul. You will be one heartbeat from hell and you will not know it or care about it. Lies will be accepted as truth and you will feel no need for the Bible and the plan of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.

I repeat, this is a very serious offense to reject the Lord Jesus and His shed blood for your sins, lost person. One day your call for salvation will be over and you will never be given a call to salvation from God again. This is a very scary situation to be in and I whole heatedly suggest that anyone reading this who is not saved to quickly run before the Lord Jesus, get on your knees, repent of your sins and accept the Lord Jesus into your heart! Do it now as tomorrow may be too late. What if... this is YOUR last Gospel call? What if...after you once more harden your heart to the Lord Jesus that God decides to give up on you!

Heb 2
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

It is not a light matter to reject the saving Gospel of the Lord Jesus. God became a man and died on the cross to pay for our sins so we could be saved from hell. He bore our penalty in hell so we would not have to. To reject the Lord Jesus and His shed blood is a great crime.

THE BLINDING VEIL

The lost person is blinded as with a veil over their eyes preventing them from seeing spiritual truth. Here is a description from the Bible:

2 Cor 3
13 And not as Moses, [which] put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which [vail] is done away in Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

Notice the only thing that can remove that veil. A person who turns to God and accepts the Lord Jesus has the blinding veil removed. That person with the aid of the Holy Spirit gains the ability to understand and perceive spiritual things from God. However, until salvation a lost person cannot understand the Bible and the things of God. Such a person does not know Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. He many have acquired some head knowledge and can recite some facts, but that is about it. The lost person remains one heartbeat from an eternity in hell and is unable to perceive the extremely dangerous situation he is in.

The truth of the Gospel is completely hid to the lost person. Below is a verse that describes that fact:

2 Cor 4
3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The saving Gospel is hidden from the lost. They cannot see their need as it is hidden. Only by turning to the Lord will the veil be removed and the Gospel becomes un-hidden. The Lord Jesus is the key. He is our Saviour and He must be either accepted or rejected. If He is rejected the veil remains firmly in place and the gospel is hidden to the lost person. The above verses also mention the fact that the devil has a part in keeping the lost person blinded. The goal of Satan is to take as many people to hell, the lake of fire as possible. He blinds them by allowing the lost person to focus on worldly riches and gains. The things of God are of no interest to the lost person as he would rather seek the temporal things of this world. This pleases the devil and he has found many ways to keep the lost totally blinded. Some tools of the devil used to blind the lost are love of money, love of pleasure and immorality, love of power, and self-gratifying self-love. The lost person gets so caught up in this world that he thinks nothing about eternity. He is totally blinded to the fact that he is one heartbeat from hell. While he lives, hell is not an issue. It is just some religious thing that doesn't exist. Only after death when the lost person perishes in their sins that hell becomes a reality. However, by then it is too late as there is no salvation available to dead people. Once a person dies their eternity is sealed. They have either accepted the Lord Jesus and are saved or they are lost hellbound sinners. There is no middle ground. A person is either saved or lost.

CONCLUSION

This article ends on a sad note. No one wants to see a person perish and spend their eternity in hell. God certainly does not want a person to perish. The call from the Lord to everyone right now is this:

Isa 1
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Yet despite the call of God, lost men still reject Him. They want nothing to do with salvation. Instead the devil gives them the temporal joys and toys of this world and that gives a temporary satisfaction to the lost person. As a result of hearing the Gospel and rejecting, there comes a time when God hardens their heart and keeps them blinded to the truth. God honors the lost person's choice to reject salvation and to perish. The lost person remains blinded and lives his life just one heartbeat from hell. All his life the lost person could die instantly in an accident and perish forever. Yet the lost person thinks nothing of life after death. He is too busy being blinded and seeking personal pleasures. Hell will be full of these types of people.

John 3
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
